Got this just in time for my hunting season. Been looking for a more reliable compass than the little ball ones that seem to have serious accuracy issues. Anyway, I pulled it out of the box and immediately the top fell off the L-bracket that you pin to your coat. Needless to say I was pretty irritated. So I sanded the bottom of the compass housing and top of the L-bracket, applied a generous amount of epoxy and clamped it together to see if it would hold the next morning when I left for the hunting trip. Luckily it seemed to take pretty well, but I don't have a whole lot of confidence in the repair I made. Also took apart the compass housing and it's just a cheap button compass in there. All the money is in the brass housing and bracket which failed immediately. Needless to say, I'm keeping it because of the repair I made, but if it comes off my jacket during a hunt, I'm probably not going to waste my time looking for it...or buy another one...Marbles has been making one of the best small compasses for years. The quality of construction is excellent the compass is actually quite accurate for a compass of this size. My only knock, the mail time was forever primary reason for only 4 stars. If you don't mind the wait you will get a good quality survival compass that will take a beating.I like this item. Works well and attaches easily. I bought 2 of them.Recieved one from my Great Grandfather during his last deer season in 2003. I ordered one fully expecting the quality of construction to have diminished over the years, and to my surprise, It definitely has not.Nice portable compass for backpacking or in an emergency situation.Pin is on wrong side of backing plate so it pins on backwards compared to my old marbles. Its not level it would be it the pin was reversed. You get good quality china junk. Not American at all. Big let down.I bought this pin-on model as I had one in the 70s. The pin-on base is attached with a weak pin to the compass base. It pops off everytime. Now I have to carry the compass in a pocket. Do yourself a favor, don't buy this, but buy the marbles pocket compass that has a string eyelet.Lost the original that I bought in the 70's. Original worked perfectly - American made, sturdy, reliable, dial turned easily and stopped quickly. Dial worked even when held quite a ways from level. When attached to hunting coat, pin never came loose. Got me out of the woods and back to my truck many times when foggy or snowing. This replacement is a big disappointment. There is a bubble in the liquid, the dial turns slowly and dial absolutely must be held perfectly level. If even slightly away from level, the dial will not move. Pin is weak and on the wrong side and comes loose too easily. Not a quality product. No markings regarding where it was made. Definitely not made in U.S. Cannot recommend buying this compass.
