I knew I wanted something bigger than a hatchet but didn't want to be carrying around a full size axe. This fit the bill. It was a little smaller than I had imagined. It only performs a little bit better than my hatchet does. The handle feels thin and I am afraid I'm going to break it. After using it for a couple days, the handle still hasn't broke and the head hasn't come off. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.Maybe Marbles looked at the length of this axe, and the weight of its head, and thought: this product is meant for children, ergo, it should be easy for children to grip. Well, if not, or either way, the handle - where you grab it - is about as thick as a broomstick. Slightly more than one inch, looking at it from the side; less from the front or back.It IS the traditional length and weight of an adult's 'pack axe', meant to be carried in a backpack and used either one or two handed. The skinniness of the handle - I won't say makes it impossible - but it's like using tiny children's scissors in place of regular scissors. Wrong Tool! That said, it might be great for Cub Scouts, with proper supervision of course.Bought this for camping, splitting small wood for our fire pit at home, nothing major. First thing I noticed was the edge needed work, I figured it would. A little file work and cuts good. Made a sheath for the edge, to protect it. Handle is thin, I don't know how long it will hold up, needs to be thicker. The head is only half harden steel. The cutting edge is hard, the flat side we all use for a hammer, is not harden. Iv made knives for years, never made a hatchet, but I know when steel is harden, and when its not. File skates over cutting edge, digs on flat side. Tapped the flat side with a piece of metal, left an impression, tapped it, not striking it hard. Overall you get what you pay for, it does serve a a purpose and I'm not taking that away from it. Could I take the head, throw it in a forge, quench it in oil to harden it, put a new thicker handle on it, sure I can. Or I could have spent 50 more bucks and got a hand forged hatchet. Buy this in mind for small home projects, but you will be replacing the handle. Everyone has different options, if I knew the whole head wasn't harden I would not have bought this.Alot smaller then expected. Its to long to be a hatchet but to short to be a wood spliting axe. The handle is unfinished and is a bit lacking in girth, feels like if i used it, it might break.Pretty nice little axe.Mine also came with a little chip in the top corner of the edge. There was nothing protecting the axe edge other than the box it came in.That being said. It came relatively sharp, handle is excellent. I split a bunch of wood I had bucked this afternoon and it was smooth operating. Highly reccomend for anyone looking for a good everyday axe.My original plan was to put a new handle on it but ill let you know that it was loose out of box. Edge was serviceable i already own the smaller version and it’s supposed to have the same head but the one that came was an 1/8 inch shorter from factory grinding kind of disappointing. Handle does not fit a mans hand well to skinnyMy axe appears to be the one commonly marketed as Marbels MR704. The axe arrived sharp, the grain on the handle was aligned properly and there was no give or play between the axe head and handle after two of weeks use in the back country. I think the axe is a good bargain though it has been tough sourcing a nice sheath for it so I have resorted to making one. I do appreciate the slightly longer handle for bigger cutting jobs than a traditional camp axe.Took an edge, kept it during use. Handle is pretty thin but its for my 11 year old, so it fits his hand.Handle bole as supplied was wider than the head, not great for splitting, a bit of time with a rasp and sand paper and it is a great camp axe, swings well, not for felling redwoods but a great tool around camp.Fine tool. The haft has perfectly aligned grains, and is shaped comfortably. A bit thick at the shoulder, but nice in the hand. The head is tight and reasonably sharp out of the box. Pairs well with the Style and Craft sheath too. This actually not as large as the picture shows. I tried to contact the seller and heard nothing. I managed to modify this into hatchet size but now need to find a big axe
