Devotion has been released with many different covers and with different track orders. For instance, on my copy Marbles is the first track and it is combined with Sirens. In this case, the name was even changed to Marbles, probably to capitalize on the most known track on the album as it was also played by Santana and Buddy Miles. It is McLaughlin's third solo album (depending upon how you are counting). It is 35 minutes long. The sound is slightly rough like many jazz fusion albums of this time period. This comes out of sessions in which McLaughlin was playing with Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies. Buddy Miles and Larry Young are on this album. This album sounds like the Mahavishnu Orchestra but a little more hard edged and rocky. About half the music on this album gets reworked later by the Mahavishnu Orchestra but under different titles. You will certainly recognize many of the musical portions the first time you listen to this.Along with Marbles (which is also on the Santana/Buddy Miles live album) the real standout is the bass and keyboard interplay on Devotion.I am not really happy with McLaughlin. He ridiculed Frank Zappa for his long guitar solos, while McLaughlin has had his share of excesses or even more. But, it is hard not to love this album (as compared to some of McLaughlin's later and dated sounding albums).
